The new processor will be used for high-performance tablets and Chromebooks, which will hit the market in the third quarter of this year.
It’s called Kompanio 1300T and it’s the new processor that MediaTek has just announced, providing the first details on the technologies integrated into this chip. It is a processor that will not be used on smartphones, but on tablets, Chromebooks, and possibly other hybrid devices dedicated to smart working.
These devices will all have integrated 5G and high performance, thanks to the 8-core architecture of the Kompanio 1300T, even as regards multimedia. They will also be able to take pictures and record videos in very high resolution and drive good quality external screens.
On the other hand, consumption should be low thanks to the 6 nm production process, which according to MediaTek will allow these devices to stay on for a whole day. With the Kompanio 1300T, therefore, MediaTek wants to attack the segment of the tablet and Chromebook market today occupied by the Snapdragon 865/870, that is, the fairly high-end and high-cost devices. The first devices equipped with this processor will arrive at the end of 2021.
MediaTek Kompanio 1300T: Technical Characteristics
MediaTek Kompanio 1300T is a chip with an architecture that we could define as “ classic ”: it is based on high-performance ARM Cortex-A78 and high-efficiency ARM Cortex-A55 cores, like most of the chips in production today. MediaTek, however, still does not say how many A78s and how many A55s will make up the total of the eight cores, nor does it state the maximum frequency of the chip.
Instead, we know that it will have a 9-core Mali-G77 MC9 GPU and an APU (AI processing unit) designed by MediaTek itself. In a nutshell, the Kompanio 1300T would appear to be a slightly more powerful MediaTek Density 1200 .
What Tablets Can Do With The New Chip
Moving from theory to practice, what can devices equipped with MediaTek Kompanio 1300T do? The experience with the first smartphones equipped with Dimensity 1200, such as the very recent OnePlus Nord 2 leaves us hoping for good.
What is certain is that such devices will be able to integrate cameras with resolution up to 108 MP, record videos in 4K and 60 fps, drive external screens up to 2.5K (or two Full HD simultaneously), manage even quite complex video games and connect to 5G networks with excellent peak speed.
All that remains is to wait a few months to remove all doubts: the first tablets and laptops equipped with MediaTek Kompanio 1300Twill arrive on the market in the third quarter of 2021.
