Microsoft has kept its promise: After the presentation of Windows 11 last week, the first Insider version of Windows 11 is now available. This gives Windows Insiders the opportunity to test Windows 11 in advance. Not yet with all the announced functions, these are to be introduced gradually, which the development team also points out in the blog post on the availability of the Windows 11 Insider Preview.

To install Windows 11 Insider Preview, a Windows Insider account must be linked in the Windows 10 settings (and “Update and Security,” “Windows Insider”). Then “Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.22000.51” can be downloaded and installed via Windows Update.

Features Will Be Removed From Windows 10

We expressly advise against installing the Windows 11 pre-release version on a productive computer, as this can lead to hardware and software compatibility problems and bugs. In addition, when switching from Windows 10 to Windows 11 (Insider Preview), various Windows 10 functions documented on this Microsoft page will be removed. The following are removed, for example, Cortana, Snipping Tool, Timeline, Wallet, and Internet Explorer.

Compared to the leaked Windows 11 developer version, which we had already tested here, there are a number of new functions to try out in the Windows 11 Insider Preview. The leaked Windows 11 version had the build number “21996.1”. The Windows 11 Insider Preview is more up-to-date with build number 22000.51.

We were able to upgrade a Windows 10 computer to Windows 11 without any problems. Windows 11 Insider Preview took over all-important Windows 10 settings. The completely revised settings menu, for example, is new and presents all the options available to users in a visually appealing form. There is also a look at the new file explorer and the notification center.

Other interesting changes:

• Themes: There is a light standard theme and a dark theme to choose from.
• Sounds: New sounds, some of which adapt to the selected theme (light or dark). Including a start sound that was not available in Windows 10
• Widgets: The first widgets are available for the widgets screen (they did not exist for the leaked Windows 11 version).
• Microsoft Store: Users can take a first look at the completely redesigned Microsoft Store.
• Dynamic Refresh Rate: The DRR function in the display settings allows Windows 11 to adjust the refresh rate dynamically. With mobile devices, this can ensure a longer runtime, so DRR is only available on some laptops.
• Wi-Fi 6E support: Windows 11 supports Wi-Fi 6E. Appropriate devices and drivers are required. Intel AX210 and routers such as ASUS Rog Rapture GT-AXE11000, Netgear Nighthawk Router, Linksys Hydra Pro 6E, and Linksys Atlas Max 6E are supported.

Problems In Windows 11 Insider Preview

Microsoft points out that Windows 11 Insider Preview also has various known bugs and inconveniences, which will be gradually fixed in future versions. In addition, other new Windows 11 functions will be gradually introduced.

A selection of the known problems:

• The taskbar is currently not viewed across all monitors.
• If a Windows 10 computer with multiple accounts is upgraded, the Windows 11 settings may not start.
• When calling up the new Settings app, there may be display problems for a short time.
• The “Install” button does not work with some apps in the new Microsoft Store app.
